We care about your safety.
Companies in the financial services industry are sometimes the first to detect elder abuse because of the proximity to seniors and their financial decisions. At Golden Gateway Financial, we are in a unique position to make a positive contribution to the lives of seniors. Not only are we advocates for the safety of our clients, we are also required by law to report instances or suspicion of abuse.
What is elder abuse?
Elder abuse encompasses intentional and negligent acts by anyone that cause harm to a vulnerable adult. Elder abuse may be financial, physical, emotional or may take another form altogether.
What factors lead to an abusive situation?
In some instances, mental impairment or social isolation may contribute to a senior's vulnerability. Studies have revealed that living with someone else may actually increase potential for abuse, especially if that person has a history of domestic violence.
What are signs of financial abuse toward elders?
Signs of financial abuse are often seen in the form of unusual transactions. Opening joint accounts, adding names to credit cards, or unusual checking account activity, including out-of-sync check numbers or large cash withdrawals, may all be related to financial exploitation. In addition, allegations of missing funds by a senior or the accompaniment of an older adult by someone who does not allow the older adult to speak may also be signals that something is amiss.
What are the signs of physical abuse toward elders?
Certain kinds of injuries, such as bruises or broken bones, and signs of neglect, like bedsores or unattended medical needs, may also be indicators of elder abuse. More subtle indicators include unexplained depression and a tense relationship with a caregiver.
What should I do if I suspect elder abuse?
Call 9-1-1 immediately if you or someone you know is in life-threatening danger.
If you have reason to believe that a senior you know may be suffering in an abusive circumstance, try to find the cause and please speak up. If the danger is not immediate, please tell the local adult protection services or the police.
The National Eldercare Locator can refer you to a local agency that can help. They are available by telephone at 1-800-677-1116, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
